Juggling five or six remotes is a hassle, as is keeping them organized and scrambling to find the correct one. Many people own removes for a DVR, DVD player, sound system, CD player and cable or satellite receivers.  These are just the common ones. Add to the mix all the many remotes that come with the small electronics as well, such as remotes for digital picture frames and anti-bark devices. It can be confusing and difficult. There is an option, though, that will allow users to consolidate several remotes into just one. The Logitech Harmony 700 is a universal remote that will work with up to six different devices, streamlining entertainment and adding convenience. However, is it worth the $149.99 price tag to purchase one?  Scroll down to find out.

The Logitech Harmony 700

Logitech Harmony 700

Universal remotes are not new to the market and neither is the Logitech brand.  At the same time, this specific model does have unique features that are not found in one package elsewhere. As mentioned before, it will replace up to six remotes, but there are more than six different device types to choose from. The small electronics are typically not compatible with the Harmony 700; it is primarily meant to replace bigger and more used items, such as remotes used for computers, game consoles, television, amplifiers, and DVD players, to name a few.  Changing batteries is not necessary, as it comes with a rechargeable battery that charges via a USB cable and the computer. Other features include a USB cable, guide, and online support. The remote is digital, has a color screen, and one-click activity buttons to simplify which function and device is in use.

On the other hand, there are some downsides to the device.  Purchasing the remote directly from Logitech will cost a hefty $149.99, but it can be found cheaper elsewhere.  At the time of this writing, the Harmony 700 was on sale for a cool $95 at Amazon.com.

Also, the manufacturer only offers a one-year warranty.  Most families will consider this somewhat of an investment, and would certainly expect to get more than one year of use out of it, though the warranty timeframe is not necessarily low for the type of product. It also does not allow for RF compatibility, meaning that it has to be in sight of the device it is attempting to control. The screen is not a touch screen, also needs to be viewed head-on otherwise, it is useless. It is also limited at 6 devices, meaning that there still may be need for additional remotes in the living room.

These negatives may not necessarily be negatives to some, but there are other models available that do have these features. In the Logitech family alone, there are several other options to choose from, with a wide range of features and prices. The less expensive models, such as the Logitech Harmony 650, consolidates fewer devices, some do not have an LCD screen at all. Luckily, as the capabilities go down, so does the price. Likewise, as the capabilities go up, the price does as well. Every model offered by Logitech that is more advanced than the Harmony 700 will allow the user to control at least 15 devices has a rechargeable cradle and some also allow for RF compatibility, touch screen control.

Logitech does not control the market for universal remotes. Other brands include Sony, Philips, RCA, and One for All. Logitech receives consistently high reviews, but so do several other brands and some have prices starting as low as $5.00 for very basic models, while Logitech lists its most basic model at $50.00.

Certainly the best thing to do is to first determine a price range, and then search for models within that price range. Read the available reviews and then choose a model that has both good reviews and the primary features that are wanted.  Adding a universal remote to the home, like the Logitech Harmony 700, can streamline the use of multiple devices people use, often many times daily. For families with small children, the cost may well be worth not having to hide and use several remotes simultaneously, and a remote with a rechargeable battery may eventually pay for itself in battery savings alone

The Logitech Harmony 650 is a very popular remote today. This sells for $75 at most sites, meaning it is definitely on the cheaper end of the scale. It is far less expensive than other universal remotes, such as the Logitech Harmony 900.  However, do not let that fool you-this is still a very high quality device. Here is a thorough review to help you find out if it would meet your needs:

Logitech Harmony 650 Pros

Flexibility

It works with five thousand different brands. Therefore, no matter what model your home entertainment system is, it should work for you. The company claims it will work for everyone. While this might be a stretch, there is a very high chance it will be compatible with your system, unless you have a very exotic brand.

Simple

All that is required to use the remote is to first select the system you want to run, such as the TV, DVD player, CD player, etc. Then, you can control that particular device with just the click of a button. Even if you have guests over who have never used your systLogitech Harmony 650em, they can figure it out in a hurry. One neat feature is that it comes with a most watched channels button that enables you to get to your favorite channels with a single click. This is relatively rare for machine in this price range.

Clear display

The buttons are bright and clearly marked, and therefore it is very easy to operate, even in dark rooms. In addition, the light is not overly bright, as is the case with some models.

Style

It might not be a huge issue, but the remote does look quite good. It has a nice metallic finish to it, which contrasts well with the black bottom. Overall, it looks quite futuristic.

Logitech Harmony 650 Cons

Supporting devices

It only supports five different devices, whereas other remotes by Logitech work with up to 15, such as the Logitech Harmony 1100. Therefore, it will control the TV and DVR player without issues. However, if you have a really advanced home entertainment system, it will not be able to control everything.

For most people, five devices will be enough. After all, the main systems you will find yourself coming back to are the TV, CD and DVD player, and for most people, anything more is just overkill. However, it is something to think about. To pick the devices you want it to work with, you have to first connect it to the internet via the USB port, and then choose during the setup.

Display

It does not have a touch screen system, but few $75 remotes do.

Lack of comfort

It does not have a contoured design, which means it does not fit in your hand as well as other remotes. Therefore, the Harmony 650 is not quite as comfortable to use.

Batteries

Depending on where you buy it, it usually comes with two batteries. However, they are not rechargeable, and buying new batteries will get pricey if you use it often.

Setup

You have to set it up online, and it can be a bit challenging for the non-technical person. Connecting it with the USB port to the internet is easy enough, but after that, things can get a bit challenging. However, there is live support if you have any problems, so you will get it figured out eventually.

Warranty

The warranty is only twelve months, which is less than the more expensive Logitech models. However, it is certainly on par with most other remotes of its price range.

Conclusion

This remote stacks up well to comparably priced remotes. It does have plenty of drawbacks. However, most of them are relatively minor, and are not important for most people. If you want to save money while still getting a decent remote, the Logitech Harmony 650 is one to consider.

The Logitech Harmony 880 And My Experience

When my younger sister moved out of mom and dad’s house into her first apartment, naturally all of her electronics went with her – specifically her television and DVD player. In addition, of course, after she had the place decorated and set up to her liking, all of her remote controls had disappeared, because normal remote controls always seem to disappear. If it is not dropped in a couch cushion or carried absentmindedly into the kitchen during commercials, it seems as if they sometimes just decide to fall off the planet forever. Hers were that kind, of course: nowhere to be found after the last box was folded up and recycled. It became a family joke because for some reason, she could not figure out how to make her Cable TV remote do anything with her DVD player, even though it was supposed to be compatible.

Since it was only a week or so before Christmas, I got her one of those little universal remotes as a combination of practical and gag gift. We all laughed, and I helped her configure it, which was sort of a nuisance, but at least she could use it to change channels, AND watch her DVD movies, AND adjust the volume.

This was a major triumph, at least until her old DVD player died and she got a new one…and she was right back to multiple remotes and losing one or the other every few days, because even the so-called universal remote did not want to work on the brand new model she had gotten.Logitech Harmony 880 Screen

Therefore, this Christmas, I plan to get her a Logitech Harmony 880 Universal Remote Control like I have. It is pretty expensive compared to other universal remotes out there, so it will definitely be a combination Christmas and Birthday gift, but it will be well worth it. I love mine, and I know she will love hers. It is called a universal learning remote control, because it can learn how to operate a device from the existing remote (before you pack the old one away forever). This is very handy for the cutting edge technology that may not have shown up in the database yet.

I will probably still help her set it up, but I doubt I will need to. It is all easily done by connecting to the internet. The setup process asks you a few questions and your answers get you started. In addition, if anything does not seem to be working properly, you can get help right from the remote itself as you go through some basic troubleshooting and implementing fixes in a sensible, step-by-step fashion called ‘Remote Assistance.’ This feature is turned off permanently on my own Harmony 880, but I have it set up just how I like, and I’ve never had my sister’s shortcoming in figuring them out. She will probably get a lot of use out of Remote Assistance, and I will probably get a lot fewer phone calls to help her configure her newest purchase.

It has a nice, built-in LED screen display, which surprisingly is not too obnoxiously bright to use when you are watching television or movies in the dark. In addition, the database of codes for different remote controls that it can access is simply enormous. There is no need to fight with any of her electronic components. All you have to have is an internet connection and every device you want to control electronically should be set up and working fine in no time.

In addition, the most recent model of the Harmony 880 comes with built-in lithium ion batteries that recharge as it sits in its cradle. Not only does this means no more dead batteries, the cradle itself also adds to making it harder to lose. Moreover, everyone knows that is a big plus, especially for my sister.
